The best gift to give + to receive is free, if your heart is open to it… love. Here are a few thoughts I have on the subject + why I love to celebrate valentine’s day.
My relationship is a rarity in many cases. I fell in love with my high school sweetheart. We said ‘I love you’ after only 2 months of dating. He (being ryan, my husband) is the only man I have ever said those 3 words to. And while it might be cringe-worthy to some, I am proud that I followed my heart, even at the very young age of 17, and trusted the love we had.
17 years later… here we are. Still in love. Still together. Still saying ‘i love you’ multiple times a day.
Now, let’s jump out of the clouds here for a minute + come back down to reality. Our relationship is less than perfect. Hello! We have 2 small children that have erratic sleep schedules (or lack of schedules). We also have been known to bicker, push each other’s buttons + even fight dirty which is one of my worst qualities. However, at the foundation of our relationship is a whole lot of love, trust, respect, honesty + compassion. So, when fuses are short, sleep is lacking, pressure from work is high or someone forgot to put out the trashcans that are spewing over with dirty diapers, our love always brings us back + puts life back into perspective.
Spreading love is one of the best gifts to give. We all want to feel loved. Regardless of the way you appreciate it most. When someone shows us love, our whole mind, body + spirit reacts. I am a huge proponent of making everyday moments special + meaningful. I also love traditions. So, valentine’s day is just one more reason to shower our loved one’s with a little extra.
Our valentine’s day tradition is to make a nice dinner at home together, along with uncorking a great bottle of wine. Ryan usually has some surprise up his sleeve. I love to find that perfect card to write down a few sentimental words for him to read. I think as our kids grow up, I would love to come up with a family valentine’s day tradition to celebrate together.
Let’s all spread some love around this valentine’s day. Take a moment to show how much that special person in your life means to you! And babe, I love you endlessly… I am so incredibly grateful for that day at the dave matthew’s concert when you asked me to be your girlfriend!
