Our family of four joined my parents for a week of sun + sand in the beautiful riveria maya for our first family vacation.
Traveling with kids, (very young kids) sounds daunting. There is so much planning involved + tons of stress anticipating what it will be like to uproot your family to a new location for a short time period. When my parents first invited us, months ago, to join them on their annual trip to mexico, I will admit, my initial answer was no. Actually it might have been, hell no. However, the more ryan + I talked about it, we quickly started to see the positives far-outweighed the negatives.
Before I knew it, we booked our airfare, reserved our hotel room + we were on our way to the passport center for blake. A few days after thanksgiving, we jumped on a plane + headed to the riveria maya for our first family vacation. And truly, it was an a-w-e-s-o-m-e trip! We had so much freaking fun, it is hard to put into words.
Experiencing the ocean through cohen’s eyes might have been my favorite part of our trip. We watch moana a ton + talked about the ocean leading up to our vacation. However, seeing his eyes light up at the vast blue water + then hearing his vivacious laugh as his toes sunk into the sand, was magical. His delight to run into the water + ‘fall down’ as the waves rushed over him was a daily occurrence… over + over! I can recall his belly-aching laugh as I type this and it just fills my heart with so much happiness.
As for blake, she was not a big fan of the water. I think it was a bit too cool for her liking. However, she lounged poolside in the shade, happily smiling + giggling to herself. The humidity did wonders for her eczema + even got her little hairs on the top of her head to curl a bit. Oh and like I mentioned in her 6 month recap, her first tooth began to come through towards the tail-end of our trip.
Ryan celebrated his birthday while we were in mexico too. My parents watched the kids so we could go out just the two of us which was a nice break. We had a yummy dinner, followed by a long walk on the beach under the stars, that I did not want to end. Truly, this trip would not have been nearly as relaxing for ryan + I if it were not for my parents. They helped us so much + allowed us time to step away from the kids on multiple occasions. I highly recommend a 4:2 ratio of adults to children for all vacationing. It was amazing not having to tag-team every meal, sunscreen application, nap time, bath or general entertainment 24/7.
We truly had such a great time + all the planning, packing, effort + exhaustion was totally worth it. Still, weeks later, we are talking about the ocean, swimming + flying on airplanes. The memories we made will be with us for years to come too. Oh mexico, thanks for being so good to us on our first family vacation!
